Water Tank Buying Guide UAE: Everything You Need to Know Before You Buy

Buying a water tank in the UAE involves more decisions than most people realise. Beyond simply choosing a size, you need to understand material options, UAE Municipality certification requirements, supplier reliability factors, installation requirements, and warranty terms. Getting these decisions right ensures your tank performs reliably for its full design life.

This guide walks through every stage of the purchase process.

Step 1: Understand What You Need the Tank For

Start by defining the application, because different applications have different requirements.

Potable water storage (drinking, cooking, bathing): Requires UAE Municipality Certified food-grade materials. All tanks you consider for this application must carry a valid UAE Municipality Certificate.

Fire suppression reserve: Requires a tank rated for the required storage volume and pressure, with appropriate fire system connections. Not required to be food-grade but must meet structural requirements.

Irrigation water: Lower specification requirements than potable water. Standard polyethylene tanks without food-grade certification can be used, though certified tanks are often the same price and provide additional assurance.

Wastewater or septic: Requires GRP fiberglass or specifically rated polyethylene tanks designed for below-grade burial and biological environments.

Industrial process water: Requirements vary by the specific liquid stored. Chemical resistance specifications may exceed standard potable water tank specifications.

Step 2: Choose the Material

For potable water in the UAE, the choice is typically between polyethylene and GRP fiberglass:

Polyethylene (PVC plastic tanks): Best for residential and light commercial applications up to 6,000 US Gallons. Cost-effective, good UV resistance, excellent thermal performance with 5-layer construction, service life 10 to 15 years.

GRP Fiberglass: Best for commercial and industrial applications above 3,000 US Gallons, underground installations, and applications requiring maximum service life. More expensive than polyethylene at equivalent capacities, service life 20 to 25 years.

If both materials could meet your application, the guidance in the GRP vs Polyethylene comparison article on this site can help you decide.

Step 3: Calculate the Required Capacity

For residential properties, use 350 litres per person per day as the consumption estimate and aim for at least one day's supply as minimum storage:

3 people: 1,050 litres = 280 USG minimum; recommend 500 USG 5 people: 1,750 litres = 460 USG minimum; recommend 750 to 1,000 USG 8 people: 2,800 litres = 740 USG minimum; recommend 1,000 to 1,500 USG

For commercial properties, consult an MEP consultant or contact KHAZAAN for a sizing calculation based on your building type and occupancy.

Step 4: Choose Between Vertical and Horizontal

Vertical tanks are the standard for rooftop residential installations. Horizontal tanks suit restricted-headroom locations or large commercial and industrial applications. See the Vertical vs Horizontal article on this site for detailed guidance.

Step 5: Choose 3-Layer or 5-Layer (for Polyethylene Tanks)

If the tank will be installed in direct sunlight on a UAE rooftop, 5-layer construction with thermal insulation significantly reduces the temperature of stored water during summer. If the tank will be in a shaded or indoor location, 3-layer is adequate and less expensive. See the 3-Layer vs 5-Layer article on this site for the full comparison.

Step 6: Verify the Supplier

Before purchasing, verify these four things about your chosen supplier:

UAE Municipality Certification for the specific tank model and size you are purchasing. Documented warranty terms (5 years for polyethylene, 2 years for GRP). Confirmed delivery to your location within your required timeframe. A physical UAE business presence with a trade licence and contact details you can verify.

Step 7: Confirm Installation Requirements

Before delivery, confirm:

Access route to the installation location. Can the tank be carried, or does it need a crane? Foundation or support structure: Rooftop tanks need a concrete plinth or steel frame. Ground-level tanks need a level concrete pad. Connection points: Where are the inlet and outlet pipes? Do they match your plumbing layout? Any permits required by your building management or the relevant municipality for tank installation or replacement.

Step 8: Arrange Regular Maintenance

After installation, plan for annual tank cleaning by a UAE-approved cleaning contractor. Maintain records of all cleaning and inspection visits. If the tank supplies potable water, consider annual water quality testing to verify that the supply remains safe.
